Sure, we can demonstrate that safety can contribute to the bottom line. Let me show you some ways how safety can contribute to the bottom line.

First of all, an employee who feels that he is in a safe place and is working with a management who is concerned with his safety is a productive employee. An employee who is always apprehensive that something may happen to him while he is working cannot produce more. He commits mistakes. We know that that production errors cost money in terms of time and materials. It can also cause delays that in the long run will cause the company to lose clients.

Secondly, and employee who is provided with adequate PPE that fits him comfortably, that is suited to his work and his environment is at ease and can do more productive work. An ill-fitting and inadequate PPE makes the worker feel uncomfortable and would lead to work slow down and absences. Illness becomes common so that production is delayed. That would cost the company more money in the long run.

Third, safety training lessens work hazards and unsafe behavior. Employees who are well-trained in work safety has better team work and thus can increase production. Lack of safety training can cause animosity and distrust between and among supervisors and employees. It can lead to demoralization and disciplinary problems that can cause work disruptions and less productivity.

Fourth, communicating safety to employees keeps them informed and aware of what should and should not be done. Employees who know what should be done do not hesitate or waste time and energy doing the wrong things or doing things the wrong way. It eliminates waste materials and man hour losses and adds to profit.

Fifth, keeping abreast of current safety procedures, safety equipment and machinery gives employees higher morale and gives them more enthusiasm to work and produce more. Employees with high morale tend to work harder. Unproductive time and absences are reduced or eliminated when employees have high morale.

Sixth, Employees look up to their superiors as their role models. Supervisors who practice what they preach in safety and who are consistent in keeping up a safe working environment will earn the respect of their subordinates. Their employees will be safety conscious and will develop a habit of safety. This gives the employees and the superior a better working relationship based on respect.

Accidents can happen to anyone at anytime. Work-related accidents will always have a negative effect on the bottom line.

A work-related accident can trigger panic and nervousness among workers in the accident area. This in turn will slow down production and man hour losses. It is counter-productive.  Aside from this it will cost the company some money in terms of compensation and additional insurance protection.

Safety practices and procedures and use of proper PPE can significantly reduce work-related accidents and reduce losses. Safety boosts up the figures at the bottom line.
