5 Safety Tips for Pipeline Workers

Job site safety for pipeline workers is everyone’s responsibility. It is the employer’s legal and moral obligation to protect their workers from harm but employees must also do their part to ensure that members of the team are not put in harm’s way.
Below are 5 tips that are easy to follow but mean a lot in job site safety:

1. Use Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)- This is a given, not just because laws require the use of such equipment, but because common sense dictates the use of such equipment to mitigate the harmful effects of job site accidents. Using personal protective equipment will be your last line of protection in case an accident does occur. Even if wearing safety gear brings you a little discomfort, endure it for your own safety.

2. Review safety evacuation procedures- It is the employer’s responsibility to provide adequate training for every pipeline worker deployed at a job site but the workers must also regularly review safety procedures for everyone’s benefit. One important safety procedure that every worker must keep in mind is what to do in case an emergency evacuation becomes necessary. A pipeline worker can go about his entire career without ever needing to make an emergency evacuation but this does not mean such procedures must be forgotten or taken for granted.

3. Examine power tools- Even the simplest tools could cause accidents and even the smallest accidents could have devastating effects to a project. Make sure the tools are all working properly, especially tools that have not been used in a long time.

4. Follow material handling instructions- Handle materials the way they are supposed to be handled, as instructed by the manufacturers, whatever they may be- heavy loads, chemicals or other materials.

5. Do not take shortcuts- Always follow standard procedures to prevent exposing yourself and other members of your team to unnecessary risks. The minutes you save on a task could end up costing you more time and money, and compromise your team’s safety.
