Things to consider when choosing an FR Winter Coat
The winter season is upon us! Now, you need protective clothing that can protect you from contrasting elements being the cold and the heat. You need to make sure that your protective outerwear will keep you warm but that it will also protect you from heat and flames on the job.
The main factor that will determine the flame resistant winter gear you require would be the FR protection required to keep you safe and compliant. While comfort is essential in all workwear as it ensures that you are able to perform your tasks without difficulty, the main function of FR clothing is to keep the wearer safe from the work hazards. The level of protection would depend on your exposure on the job and the work site. You need to make sure you understand the level of protection that the job requires as some jobs require higher levels of protection than others.
Worksite elements and risks will determine the kind of outer shell fabric you will need. What are the weather conditions at the worksite? Do you need protection from wind gusts and rain, aside from snow? The outer shell of your FR coat will be your barrier against these elements. Some outer shells are weather proof; others are breathable, managing the wearer’s temperature and providing maximum comfort.
Insulation is another factor to consider when choosing an FR winter coat. The level of insulation determines how well the coat will retain body heat so that the wearer will stay warm. The higher the insulation rating, the warmer the wearer stays and of course you want to have the level of warmth that feels most comfortable. There are different types of insulation materials used in coats such as thinsulate and polyester mesh and they are not created equal. Some materials provide greater insulation than others although this may be reflected in the price of the garment which will help you with your purchasing decision.
An often overlooked but very critical option is deciding on the type of jacket closure. The draw cords, buttons, zippers and cuff adjusters contribute to the overall comfort, warmth, and safety of the jacket.
When buying a coat, make sure you also study its other features and determine if they are things that add value to the coat. Do you require a hood? Does the coat you are considering purchasing come with a built-in hood or does it come with a hood that you can be removed and snaps on as needed? Does it come with a storm flap? Does it have pockets that are located in the right location that you could use?
Lastly, see if the coat’s design does not restrict your movement or compromise your safety when performing specific tasks. You want a coat that looks good but you want it to serve its purpose. Coats that are bulky may provide you with warmth but they might restrict your movement. The same goes for coats with waist bands.
With all the factors that need to be considered, it is not easy choosing an FR coat, but do keep in mind that there is a coat that will meet all of your needs. You just need to understand what those needs are from the very start so that you can choose the coat that is best for you, with the right balance of good aesthetics, affordability, safety, and comfort.
