Protecting Workers From Heat Stress – Oil and Gas
Precautions should be taken when working in the heat of summer especially in the oil and gas industry when heavy coveralls are usually worn for protection from flash fire. Exposure to an overdose of heat can result in heat exhaustion, cramps and even heat stroke.
Risk factors that contribute to heat related health issues are factors such as high temperatures along with high humidity, exposure to direct sunlight for long periods of time combined with heavy physical labor and lack of sufficient water intake.
Some symptoms to watch out for are headaches, dizziness and fainting along with confusion or not being able to think properly. Your employees should be provided with sufficient drinking water (at least a pint per hour), taking frequent breaks in a cool areas and wearing protective work clothing that is suited for hot weather conditions.
If yourself or a co-worker is determined to be suffering from heat stress they should be moved to a cooler area, take off the outer layer of clothing to allow heat to escape and provide cool drinking water and fanning or misting the person will also help.
