Government Money Helps Cleanup Land Use

It is important for the government to also take active participation in the remediation of land used in mining. For such projects, grants have such a big role in ensuring the success of remediation and conservation projects. In some states, fees are collected from new mining projects and then channeled to conservation projects. Fees charged for possible impacts help create long-term employment benefits in oil mining towns but also a greater chance of environmental protection.

In Kilbuck and the Ohio township state fees will be used to cap two old wells. The Commonwealth Financing Authority will give $140,000 to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy for the Toms Run Nature Reserve. Another grant worth $250,000 from the state’s Community Conservation Partnerships Program will be used to help purchase around 30 acres of property in Sewickley for the Allegheny Land Trust.
